Webinar // Understanding Freelance Liability
If you’re a freelancer, you’ve probably signed a contract at one point or another with an indemnity clause, which hints at possible legal ramifications of the work that you’re doing. What happens if a source decides to sue you for libel? Do you need liability insurance? If you’re likely working with corporate clients that require liability insurance, anticipate diving into an investigative story, or just straight-up fear getting sued as a freelancer, this webinar is for you
Issues around liability can feel incredibly confusing for freelance writers, so we brought in two experts in to talk about when (and why) you might want media liability insurance, and how to protect yourself in a contract.
Umair Kazi is a lawyer, writer, translator, and the Director of Policy & Advocacy of The Authors Guild. His writing and translations have appeared in the Brooklyn Rail, Guernica, Circumference, and other literary journals.
Carolyn Schurr Levin is a media and First Amendment attorney at the New York City law firm of Miller Korzenik Sommers Rayman LLP. She was the Vice President and General Counsel of Newsday, Vice President and General Counsel of Ziff Davis Media, and Media Law Adviser for the School of Journalism at Stony Brook University. She currently teaches Media Ethics & Law at City University of New York’s Baruch College and has also taught media law at Stony Brook University, Long Island University, and Pace University.
