Webinar // How to Leave Journalism
The journalism industry can feel precarious, and some stats show that up to 90% of us will eventually leave it because of low pay, job insecurity, and a lack of available jobs. We believe there’s absolutely no shame in that game. Journalism might be a fit for you for a short time, but you don’t have to stay with something that’s not working for you!
If you feel like you might want to leave this industry, or you want to build up some transferable skills just in case, this webinar is for you. Jenni and Wudan are joined by four folks who parlayed their journalism skills into jobs in other industries, including:
Margo Gabriel: A writer from Boston, MA, now based in Lisbon, Portugal, who pivoted into grant writing
Zorro Maplestone: A Paris-based freelance investigative journalist who used a gig as an ESL teacher to stay afloat during the pandemic
Carol Vecchione: A journalist-turned-political speechwriter, now a communications director at a Big Four accounting firm
L’Oreal Thompson Payton: After years in a newsroom, she transitioned to nonprofit PR, first as media relations for the local Girl Scout council and then as director of communications for a national education nonprofit.
In this one-hour event, each guest explains how they made their career transition, including discussing transferable skills and how they made their case to prospective clients.
